George Thomas Post-Graduate Fellowship

About George Thomas

In recognizing the importance of the principles of an open data and open government, George Thomas espoused principles to advance a civil society into optimizing the gains that technology can bring to the public. George was among an elite few who understood not only the technology, but the power of these principles in creating a healthier world. There is a dire need for bringing new talent in computer science, mathematics, and engineering sciences to health care to enhance the infrastructure of networks, computational systems, and analytics. This requires bringing new talent to the data-driven world of health care where there is a huge paucity of expertise to deal with the computational and architectural challenges we face.

The George Thomas Post-Graduate Fellowship in Health Data Science and Engineering

To honor George’s memory and great contributions to open data, the Health Data Consortium will launch the George Thomas Post-Graduate Fellowship in Health Data Science and Engineering. This Fellowship will also become a keystone around which the Health Data Consortium can build education programs well into the future.
This annual fellowship will be aimed at the post-graduate level (Masters in engineering in computational science or a related engineering field, or Ph.D. in mathematics, computer or information science) and would support one individual for a year of graduate work focused on key problems in data infrastructure and architecture that would overcome barriers in interoperability, analytics, and machine-learning.
The award will address the national interests for attracting new talent to the challenges of data management in health and health care. The interests of the Health Data Consortium intersects with the prominence of innovation Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) educational interests of many parts of our community.
